Decade Diving through sitcoms

As I took a journey through famous sitcom’s over the past few decades to see how not only how the LGBTQ community was originally treated compared to how things are now. A lot of progress has definitely been made specially if you’re looking back to the time frame of the 1960s were being an outwardly homosexual individuals was not only viewed but the aggressive laws in place to keep those that are part of the LGBTQ community not only tucked away from society but shunned ridiculed and hated. The blatant disregard for homosexuals as people was definitely heavily prevalent throughout the 60s to even the 90s. To see how things are changing especially over the past recent years is astonishing. I think the things that make us different is people are the things that makes us great as a society. What am I saying go out and take the time to meet people that are different than you. I’m happy to say for the most part been most people really can’t get away with being outwardly homophobic you have those people that are more closeted with that so I will see that that is changed over the years. A lot more people are shown publicly for being homophobic not to act as if homophobia does not still continuously happen all around the world because it definitely does!! I would like to think we as a society has grown to become more excepting of not only different peoples sexuality but I’d like to think that we are now more open with having the conversation on sexuality as a society. That’s definitely something that I’ve noticed how a lot of people even people that are not only journalist but people who want to step into that field. Along with broadcasters seeing these people say mean and hateful things about people that are a part of the LGBTQ community and that are going into journalism, broadcasting, acting or even music with homophobic views and are completely oblivious to who runs that a entire industry which is the LGBTQ community. They for the most part run the entertainment industry. I think we as people should be more accepting to people of all walks of life…

Maude

Bea Arthur iSaved a Gay Bar in the show Maude.
There’s a lot to learn from this episode let alone to unpack when it comes to this episode I think One of the biggest lessons throughout this episode was one to not move around with hate in your heart. Other thing is you’re not only have to allow yourself and allow people around you to be happy if you don’t want people to block your happiness you can’t go around blocking others happiness either. Maude and her neighbor Arthur a right wing conservative decided to head to a gay bar.Arthur who very much so is against not only gay people but the thought of them having their own public setting to gather in socialize. When you really begin to think about it that is the mindset of a lot of bigoted men in America to this day. “I don’t want to see it so get rid of it.” That’s the mindset that Arthur came into the gay bar with. While also trying to get rid of the bar claiming that they were breaking so many different laws two then at the and finally figure out that not only was the bar are right outside of city limits so therefore they weren’t breaking any laws to begin with. Arthur began ranting about how bad gays are and how there’s laws(at the time) that we’re against homosexuality being displayed in public settings. Arthur ended up getting talked into going to the gay bar and once they arrived Arthur’s blood began to boil.He began to find more ways for him to become even more uncomfortable in the bar while Maude tried to get him to ease up . She tried to coach him and prep him entire way stating that gay people are people most importantly and she drives that point home and Arthur realizes this once he finds out that there’s nothing he can do to get rid of them. Which I must say is extremely shitty, he tried to argue how it’s against the law and how even God doesn’t like Gay people. They are just people and to think there’s still people who fully believe and support Arthur in his outrage is crazy to me.

Frazier & sitcoms of the Gay 90s

The progression towards acceptance of Gay people during the duration of the 90s.

After watching Matt Baume video on YouTube on Frazier & sitcoms of the Gay 90s. Matt goes through many different variations or how gays were not only treated during the early stages of Frasier all throughout the show, but he really talked about how many different shows were starting to move towards more of the acceptance and fascination aspect of being gay. It appears as if the narrative has completely changed versus what it was during the timeframe of the 80s. Actually want to know what was really that big dynamic that really flipped everything because from the most part from what I’ve seen so far during the 80s they were a lot less excepting I want to know really what changed everything?? I see that a lot of people that are gay are looked at really looked at as an experiment rather than people. I think the societies mindset of the time it was beginning to be more excepting but I think there was a lot of people that looked at homosexuality as more of a trend versus a lifestyle in the 90s on multiple sitcoms. As Frasier when he was trying to discover and not only himself but got to a point where he questioned his own sexuality. He started asking himself the age-old questions from why he wasn’t interested in sports as a child to him growing up and being so fascinated with theater as kid he begins to fill his head on his thoughts of him possibly being gay. With his father at a certain point begins pretend to be gay and ended up becoming friends with another father. To begin to see the positive curiosities and fascinations about being gay in our society. While also seeing people become not only more open but more accepting is definitely A good sign in the right direction.

Sitcoms portrayal of homosexuality

How sitcoms portrayed homosexuality in the 70s and 80s.

I realized during a good amount of television history. That not a lot positive depictions of homosexuals or even homosexuality during the 70s and the 80s all the way up until really golden girl where Clayton let’s his feelings be known to his sister and he tries to make her understand that she needs to adjust to his new lifestyle.
If she doesn’t then he’s telling her that she won’t be a part of his life. I couldn’t imagine being in that situation dealing with a sibling who won’t accept you for you. The anger and pain that sits behind that is very real for those who are apart of the LGBTQ community..

Homosexuality

After watching the 1967 CBS Documentary – ‘The Homosexuals’ by Mike Wallace (88 minute highlight version). You truly get to see how much people were not only homophobic but would straight up display public hatred for them and were completely intolerant of them. To think about how far we have came in society is amazing and still have a lot to go. To think that was only 57yrs ago is insane. We live in a world now that if you’re openly homophobic you’ll be publicly shamed.

Corona virus

Between 40 to 80% of New York is projected to have coronavirus. To just type those words to me deserve nothing less than a eerie feeling. March 13, 2020 on this day do United States declared a state of emergency and I sat on my parents couch watching Donald Trump speak about how detrimental coronavirus can potentially be on my birthday. A good rule to live by is never get scared until idiots do and to watch Donald Trump announce that the country is in a state of emergency with the same level of panic and distress as a parent trying to explain to a five-year-old that their puppy ran away with no way to remedy the situation completely lost for words. Those piercing words might not mean a lot to a lot of people here in Texas but I can tell you as a person who half of his family is in New York upstate New York to really be exact. How damaging that could be I half of my family members who have weak immune system‘s and former cancer patients it all begins to put everything in perspective. Just to sit back and think If Donald Trump would’ve taken action when everybody was trying to explain to him how serious was maybe the death toll would be a lot smaller maybe everything wouldn’t be shut down. The people I really feel bad for when it comes to being college students are the college seniors who pretty much had their senior year of track and field along with basketball stripped away from them. words can only describe the pain they are feeling. Coronavirus is affecting a lot of different people and a lot of different places. From athletes to Kevin Durant Rudy Gobert Donovan Mitchell Karl Anthony towns or KAT as some would call him. He’s one of the main NBA stars that are really coming forward in speaking to how social distancing and really how damaging coronavirus can really be to a family with both of his parents suffering from it currently. With that said please abide by the social distancing rules it can save more than your life but your loved ones life’s as well…

Diversity in Newsroom

Diversity in the news room is extremely important for multiple reasons with media ethics. In most cases we have a lot of people that are covering things that I feel like they themselves cannot relate to in anyway shape or form. For prime example I remember reading an article about a young African-American kid who was competing in a state wrestling championship and year did dreadlocks and he was told that he had to cut his dreadlocks in order to fit on his protective gear for his head for his wrestling tournament. That whole story was covered by a white lady who I could tell in her tone that she really couldn’t understand what the big deal was when it came to surrounding why a lot of people were outraged and could be out raged. I feel like in situations like that having people of color reporting on people of color makes a bigger difference and the reception of it could be drastically different than having just your regular white person report on stories. A huge thing that really bothers me with that is that from the way that these different media outlets try to make it seem as if everybody who’s in journalism is white which that’s nowhere near the case. I’m seeing people that want to be not only journalist for broadcasters that are coming from all different walks of life media editors and all. Having diversity in the news room could provide a whole different level of understanding when it comes to interviewing people that are going through extremely traumatic experiences. I do feel like people of color that are in journalism that are in broadcasting aren’t necessarily given a fair chance to really show their talents. I do believe that People are definitely more than there skin tone but I do feel that people are deserving of a shot. A chance to show what they can do. A lot of people that get pushed away and never really get the chance to thrive.

Framing

Getting a firm understanding on how framing shapes the mindset of how information can be received is the biggest thing that people need to understand. What is the agenda what is the purpose? Is there any other way to look at this outside of what I’m being shown? What did they have to say about this? These are the important questions that we the audience need to be asking when it comes to receiving information. A lot of people don’t take into consideration the framing of questions the way how different broadcasters and journalist and even news writers and reporters can even report on a story can say a lot about what it is that we the audience is getting. A lot of people when they receive information from different news outlets and different forms of media even especially with social media they take it as the God honest gospel rather than doing the most important thing which is ask questions do individual research. My mom would always tell me that a pair of lips can always tell you anything. So it’s best for you to know something rather than believing in whatever it is somebody is telling you and you find out that you actually know nothing. Framing can determine how people think about different topics and even how people can think about other people. This is exactly why there’s so many people out here in this world that are dealing with the Islamaphobia and it’s all because of framing that has been done from not only the media but a lot of people don’t take the actual time that they need to get out and actually get a chance to get to know people. I genuinely feel like framing is used to control the narrative of whatever it is the media is trying to push. Which I can honestly say that we’ve seen that within this past year. When it comes to trump I’ve listen to Fox News talk about Donald Trump’s popularity going up after the way he handled coronavirus. The framing was made to make it appear as if more people are satisfied with the job that Trump is doing even though he failed to act.

Interracial Dating

There is a lot of interesting takes that surround interracial dating. There’s some people out here who believe that an original dating has a lot to do with self-hatred which I don’t necessarily see. There’s a lot of people that come from very multicultural families and backgrounds. I do believe that there are people out here in this world that are dating certain people because of their race and not because of the actual person. I do have an issue with that because I feel under no circumstances should anybody try to treat a person as if they were commodity.
Coming back to my previous point that I made earlier about people dating outside of their race because of it being self-hate now I’m not saying that there isn’t any cases of that because I have came across people that fit into that category but when you compare them to the masses that’s a small scale from what I believe. I do believe that the majority of people are excepting too interracial relationships I do not believe that in the public‘s reaction to interracial dating and in interracial relationships is the same as it was back in the 60s or 50s or the 40s. I do believe that there’s a fine line between having your own preferences and having self-hate I think that all goes into the manner in which how things go. I think a lot goes into interracial dating that a lot of people don’t think about what is each person family backgrounds how diverse is your family what side of the city is your family from. I have a close friend of mine who is from the south side of Houston whose name is Jake who is white. Due to where he’s from he has became more accustomed to dealing with more black people than white. For Jake dating black women makes sense because of where he’s from and how he grew up. I genuinely do believe like for the vast majority of people that’s really what it comes down to like what’s around us and not only just that but people also like what they’re accustomed too.

Islamphobia

There were many different things I took away from islamaphobia. There is multiple people living with Islamphobia taking out there preconceived notions on Muslims. There’s so much organized hate and propaganda that gets spread about Muslims which I think is completely insane. I think different media outlets focus on the things that divide us versus things that unite us .I’ve also had close friends who are muslim sit down and hear them talk about their daily struggles that come along with being Muslim in America. They would go into deep detail how mean and evil and even hateful people are when they have been seen out in a public setting wearing kufi and a hijab. It’s terrible to think about good hard working and honest people being called “ terrorist” and other foul remarks is ridiculous. With the way things of changed in our society it’s crazy to think that there is people out in the world who have prejudice against different people of different religions but the will turn around and try to take something from that culture and try to appropriate the culture. I see that a lot today with women who try to wear a long scarf wrapped up in a fashion as if it was a hijab, this was something that I noticed that Kylie Jenner and multiple other celebrities have done. Most people by into the propaganda that they see from these different media outlets that try to paint Muslims in a negative light as if they are terrible people. My close friend is Muslim his name is Bai he also from Africa early into our friendship he that a good portion of Muslims are black. As we all know the more the friendship grows you begin to grow together in a sense of getting to know more about the ins and outs of things such as major does and don’t Islamic faith, I realized early that a lot of different media outlets and people that have their preconceived prejudice. They haven’t actually taken the time to get to know the people they are discriminating against, so they don’t really even know if the prejudice or in their mind precaution that they’re taking is even true or not. They can actually find out for
themselves by actually talking and trying to get them rather than them believing in what they’re told and it’s usually built on lies.
