Diversity in Newsroom

Diversity in the news room is extremely important for multiple reasons with media ethics. In most cases we have a lot of people that are covering things that I feel like they themselves cannot relate to in anyway shape or form. For prime example I remember reading an article about a young African-American kid who was competing in a state wrestling championship and year did dreadlocks and he was told that he had to cut his dreadlocks in order to fit on his protective gear for his head for his wrestling tournament. That whole story was covered by a white lady who I could tell in her tone that she really couldn’t understand what the big deal was when it came to surrounding why a lot of people were outraged and could be out raged. I feel like in situations like that having people of color reporting on people of color makes a bigger difference and the reception of it could be drastically different than having just your regular white person report on stories. A huge thing that really bothers me with that is that from the way that these different media outlets try to make it seem as if everybody who’s in journalism is white which that’s nowhere near the case. I’m seeing people that want to be not only journalist for broadcasters that are coming from all different walks of life media editors and all. Having diversity in the news room could provide a whole different level of understanding when it comes to interviewing people that are going through extremely traumatic experiences. I do feel like people of color that are in journalism that are in broadcasting aren’t necessarily given a fair chance to really show their talents. I do believe that People are definitely more than there skin tone but I do feel that people are deserving of a shot. A chance to show what they can do. A lot of people that get pushed away and never really get the chance to thrive.
